Meet Ethan Streicher, the founder and creative force behind Streicher Goods, a Brooklyn-based studio specializing in handcrafted ceramic furnishings. With a background in graphic design and roots in Berkeley, CA, and Raleigh, NC, Streicher brings a deep appreciation for geometric form and modern design to his work.
His pieces introduce warmth and a human sensibility to interior spaces, seamlessly blending artistic expression with everyday functionality. Name and what you do?
I’m Ethan Streicher, and I’m the founder of Streicher Goods, a design company based on Brooklyn, NY focused on creating hand-made ceramic homewares, ranging from lighting to home furnishings.
Biggest artistic influences?
I find a lot of inspiration from my background in Graphic design, focusing on simple geometric shapes and proportion. As far as eras go for styling inspirations, I definitely lean towards the 60s and 70s.
Where you find inspiration?
Inspiration comes from everywhere, which I know is cliche, but that’s just how it is walking around NYC, having access to instagram, and thumbing through magazines. A lot of mine comes from industrial design, old furniture, details from architecture, vintage lighting, and the like.
What is your creative process like?
My ideas start with a rough pencil sketch, mostly a linear drawing that helps me get the overall idea out of my head and figure out proportions. From there, if needed, I do a 2D sketch of the piece in Illustrator to get exact proportions before finally committing to measurements and starting the building process.
What is your first exposure to ceramics/hand-building that impacted you?
I had a number of friends doing ceramics in college, and had a small introduction to it then, but the first real impactful time I was introduced to ceramics in a bigger way was a few years ago by a friend, Nicole. She owned a small studio in Bushwick and let me come by a few times to play with clay, and I got hooked.
How do you overcome creative blocks?
Forcing an idea never seems to work—so I try to switch up what I’m doing, focus on another task, or just take a break and try again the next day with a fresh mind.
What are you currently experimenting with in your art?
I’m currently working on larger pieces, exploring making coil-built ceramic furnishings, like side tables, stools, chairs, etc. Making larger work has its own complications, so it’s been a great new horizon to explore with the skills I’ve gained over the years.
What is your routine before getting creative for the day?
My morning routine usually starts at 7:30, kicking off the morning with a dog walk for my 2 pups, and a smoothie. Before heading out of the house, I throw on some Comune moisturizer to keep my face hydrated throughout the day. Fast forward to the evening—I use a small amount of it on my hands since ceramics can really dry you out.
My nighttime routine consists of washing my face, using some toner and moisturizer, then hitting the hay.
