Name and what you do?
Lizz Jardim, Jeweler!
Biggest artistic influences?
Henning Koppal era Georg Jensen, William Spratling, Guy Vidal, Claude Lalanne, to name a few!
Where you find inspiration?
Industrial elements, architecture, raw materials - brutalism, and vintage danish modernist design.

What is your creative process like?
Lawless, haha. It really depends on the day I guess! I enjoy fabrication more than other approaches in creating, so sometimes I will have an idea and see what materials I have around to work with that align with it, but usually there is a lot of play in there. Other days I might find some weird scrap or odd end that speaks to me and work backwards from that. Lately, I've been enjoying the freedom of just melting down and manipulating casting scraps to see what forms come to be.
What is your first exposure to ceramics/hand-building that impacted you?
I took an intro to silversmithing class when I was in the FMM program at FIT. I had some experience with making clothes and bags when I was younger, but there was something about working with metal that hit differently- it felt oddly forgiving in comparison. Unlike apparel, I loved the idea of creating things that could be used/worn daily. As a broke college student without money for designer threads, being able to create pieces that felt unique to myself + wear them regularly made me feel put together regardless of the status of my clothing, which brought confidence where there was insecurity.
How do you overcome creative blocks?
Relinquish control- that's the cool thing about working with metal. More often than not, projects don't quite go as planned, but I've learned to love that about the process. Lots of happy accidents or detours.

What are you currently experimenting with in your art?
I'm really into objects right now. I have been making a few small functional items, but I have a lot of other things I've collected that are in need of repair or mending. I've always appreciated the small details that make something unique or endearing- so I'm excited to play around with this concept of bringing new life to pieces that would otherwise be deemed broken or be discarded. I love jewelry, and it's still the primary focus of my work and livelihood, but I think there's a lot of pressure that comes with items we wear on our bodies and what that says about us that I would like to explore outside of. I think of it how someone might want to hang a painting or photo on their home, but not necessarily wear it as a graphic on a shirt. There's something poetic about being able to appreciate something privately.
What is your routine before getting creative for the day?
Sometimes we get creative before we are cognizant of it, I occasionally wake up with something in my head as if it was a commercial that played on repeat while I slept haha- on those days I jot it down before it escapes me. Otherwise I wake up and take my dog on a walk, which started as something I was obligated to do in providing care for him, but as it turns out a little walk and some fresh air is a great way to shake out whatever is bouncing around up there. I like to get a workout or some movement in as that helps canter my head and get out any lingering scaries or thoughts taking space up there. After a hot shower, I treat my face with a little Vita Boost Serum + Hydra Shroom Cream to get my skin the TLC it needs before heading into the studio, where most of the elements and compounds I work with can be pretty harsh on it.
