Amidst a population obsessed with celebrity, branded by corporate imagery, and influenced by pop culture archetypes, exists the grossly saturated mind of young America. Subconsciously identifying in the idols of luxury, we measure and categorize ourselves on a scale of iconic snapshots taken over the course of our lives in such a commercially and culturally lush point in history. Keeping at least one eye constantly fixated on whatever mountain behind which the latest stars rise, a large part of the world, yet especially Americans, consider ourselves connoisseurs of the interconnectivity that is modern media, and the now inbred pop culture she produces. While many see this mess as a belittlement of class and society itself, we are given the opportunity to weave its strands in cleverly relevant directions forming an often ironic patchwork of the characters and qualities we’ve collected as we march into the 21st century.
Artist Clifford Lidell specializes in this collage of status symbolism and archetypal story telling. Through the presentation of widely recognized celebrities and objects, he creates surreal imagery that are not only meant to invoke opinion, but subconsciously evoke connections between the observer and specific elements of the artwork. This approach to his craft is substantiated by the media in which he applies it. Working in a combination of several mediums, Lidell applies aspects of graphic design, street art, and carpentry to form polished portraits, taken from and often spitting in the face of, pop culture’s admired and elite. In ‘Switchblade Fantasy’ Clifford explores and deconstructs the lavish stereotype of celebrity with eye-catching digital collage in an emotion-evoking wash of neons atop grainy black and white photography.
